Description
The Emotion Exhibition is an exhibition that brings together two distinct forms of expression—tanka poetry and illustration—through the shared theme of emotion.
Within this world, visitors can experience the moment when these two artistic mediums intersect, revealing emotions that transcend differences in form and expression. This book fully embraces the exhibition’s concept and presents it in a single volume.
Supervised by Mika Pikazo, the book features newly created works by 40 illustrators, including Mika Pikazo herself, alongside contributions from 11 contemporary tanka poets.
The featured illustrations capture emotions that are difficult to put into words, as well as the complexity of human feelings. Meanwhile, leading modern poets present responses to tanka from Japan’s Taisho era, exploring emotions that continue to resonate across generations and time periods.
Throughout history, emotion has always been at the heart of creative expression.
In addition, this volume includes English translations on every page. The tanka translations were prepared by Peter MacMillan, a leading scholar of tanka literature. Readers can also enjoy his uniquely expressive English renditions, which read like poems in their own right.
This publication serves as the official companion book to the exhibition held at the Kadokawa Culture Museum from February 13 to March 29, 2026.
